Maintaining Healthy Relationships

Why I’m committed to helping couples be proactive – and why it matters:

Great relationships aren’t built by accident – they’re built on intention.

Most couples don’t fall apart overnight. It happens gradually, through small moments of disconnection, miscommunication, or unmet needs that quietly pile up. But when we’re proactive, we can interrupt those patterns early – long before they become entrenched or damaging.

  • Habit Formation: Every relationship builds habits – the way you speak, respond, reach for (or turn away from) each other. When you spot unhelpful patterns early, they’re much easier to shift. Wait too long, and those habits become harder to change.

  • The Little Things: That comment you brushed off, that feeling you didn’t share – can quietly snowball into resentment or disconnection if they’re not addressed. It's easier to catch a small flame before it becomes a raging fire.

  • Healthy Communication: Open, honest, non-blaming communication is a skill. The earlier you start practicing it, the more natural it becomes – especially during conflict or stress. Strong communication builds emotional safety and trust.

  • Minimising Damage: When criticism, defensiveness, contempt, or stonewalling go unchallenged, they slowly erode intimacy and connection. The longer those patterns linger, the harder they are to undo.

  • Relationship Satisfaction: Couples who talk openly, check in regularly, and address things early are far more likely to feel fulfilled, connected, and confident in their relationship – even through tough seasons.

  • The Importance of Intentionality: While our relationships are influenced by our upbringings and past experiences, with intention, we can rewrite the script. Simply "winging it" rarely leads to the relationship we desire.

Research Findings: Studies indicate that couples who seek help early are significantly more likely to resolve challenges successfully. According to the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, approximately 75% of couples who attend therapy report significant improvements in their relationship.

Want to be proactive in your relationship? That’s exactly why I created The Relationship Review – a practical, evidence-based tool that helps couples have the conversations that matter, before problems take root.

Use it to check in regularly, deepen your connection, and stay intentional about building a healthy relationship.
